Thinking Out of the Box
Hundreds of years ago, in a small Italian town, a small business owner had to pay a large sum of money to a loan-shark. The moneylender was a very old, unattractive looking guy who had developed a crush on the business owner's daughter.
He decided to offer the businessman a deal that would completely wipe out the debt owed to him. However, the catch was that we could clear the debt only if he could marry the businessman's daughter.
Needless to say, this proposal was viewed with scorn.
The moneylender said that he would put two pebbles in a bag, one white and one black.
Then the daughter had to reach into the bag and take out a pebble. Had it been black, the debt would have been wiped out, but the moneylender would have married her again. Had it been white, the debt would have been repaid, but the daughter would not have to marry the moneylender.
Standing on the pebble-stone path in the merchant's garden, the moneylender bent down and picked up two pebbles.
While he was picking them up, the daughter saw that he had picked up two black pebbles and put both in the bag.
He then asked the daughter to reach into the bag and take one.
Betty naturally had three options as to what she could do:
1. Refusal to take pebbles from the bag.
2. Take both the pebbles out of the bag and expose the moneylender for cheating.
3. Pick up a pebble from the bag well knowing that it was black and sacrifice yourself for your father's freedom.
He took out a pebble from the bag and before he could see it 'accidentally' dropped it among the other pebbles. He said to the moneylender;
"Oh, how clumsy I am. Never mind, if you look at what's left in the bag, you'll be able to tell which pebble I picked up."
The pebble left in the bag is clearly black, and seeing that the loan-shark did not want to be exposed, he had to play along as if the pebble dropped by the daughter was white, and repay his father's debt.

It's always possible to approach a difficult situation with out of the box thinking, and don't just give in to the options you think you have to choose from.

व्यापारी के बगीचे में कंकड़-पत्थर वाले रास्ते पर खड़े होकर साहूकार ने झुक कर दो कंकड़ उठा लिए।
जब वह उन्हें उठा रहा था, बेटी ने देखा कि उसने दो काले कंकड़ उठाए हैं और दोनों को बैग में रख दिया है।
फिर उसने बेटी को बैग में पहुंचने और एक लेने के लिए कहा।
बेटी के पास स्वाभाविक रूप से तीन विकल्प थे कि वह क्या कर सकती थी:
1. थैले में से कंकड़ लेने से मना करना।
2. दोनों कंकड़ बैग से बाहर निकालो और धोखाधड़ी के लिए साहूकार को बेनकाब करो।
3. बैग से एक कंकड़ अच्छी तरह से उठाओ, यह जानते हुए कि यह काला था और अपने पिता की आजादी के लिए खुद को कुर्बान कर दिया।
उसने थैले में से एक कंकड़ निकाला और देखने से पहले ही 'गलती से' उसे दूसरे कंकड़ों के बीच में गिरा दिया। उसने साहूकार से कहा;
"ओह, मैं कितना अनाड़ी हूं। कोई बात नहीं, अगर तुम थैले में जो बची है उसे देखोगे तो तुम बता सकोगे कि मैंने कौन-सा कंकड़ उठाया था।”
बैग में बचा हुआ कंकड़ स्पष्ट रूप से काला है, और यह देखते हुए कि ऋण-शार्क उजागर नहीं होना चाहता था, उसे साथ खेलना था जैसे कि बेटी द्वारा गिराया गया कंकड़ सफेद था, और अपने पिता का कर्ज चुकाना था।
